Crossing the Midline Worksheet and Exercises

Extracts from my paper on DCD (Developmental Coordination Disorder) 2019, which I wrote as part of my Masters in SLD (Specific learning Difficulties) in NUI Galway.

Critically discuss interventions that are suitable for individuals with Dyspraxia/DCD.

The purpose of this assignment is part of my own self personal development journey in understanding more about myself and importantly how to help other children who are diagnosed with specific learning difficulties.

Specific learning difficulties (SLD) are a range of learning difficulties including dyslexia, dyspraxia and dyscalculia (Skills for Access, 2010). It can be described as the way information is learned and processed

People cannot be cured or grow out of these SLD, but interventions can help give a quality of life and coping mechanism which lead into a productive and happy adult life. One finds that other talents and skills can be nurtured which can lead hopefully into successful careers.

The area that interests me in this paper is Developmental coordination disorder (DCD).

DCD affects 5–6% of school-children between the ages of  4 and 11 (APA,2013), however the research indicates that this can vary tremendously, and the majority of whom are boys (Dewey & Wilson 2001). It is believed that the origins of this disorder occur very early in a child’s life and is characterized as deficit in brain functioning that can arise from various potential causes. (Cairney, 2015)

Studies in DCD have shown that children perceive themselves as less competent than their peers, and if by participating in an intervention whereby they develop enhanced success, positive feedback and recognition then a pathway is created where an impact can be made on the essential activities of daily living.

Recent approaches are focusing towards an emphasis in a problem-solving approach to motor skill acquisition. This top down approach includes task specific intervention and cognitive approaches.

Fundamental movement skills (FMS) are the building blocks of skill development which leads hopefully to a more physical activity lifestyle and participation in sports into adult life. FMS gives us a starting point into progressing into specialized movements and skills that help participation in physical activity and sports participation.  Competence in these skills considered a cornerstone for the development of a healthy and active lifestyle and long-term fitness (Barnett et al., 2008, Barnett et al., 2009).

The learning and practice of fundamental movement skills is the basic building block for the development of physical literacy.

Within skill development repetition is an important factor and as the famous sports coach John Wooden said “the importance of repetition until automaticity cannot be overstated “. Researchers believe that the early instructions support the construction of the skill until it is strong enough to support itself on its own but has been termed as scaffolding.

With any part of intervention, the focus should be about the child. Making the child feel positive, making life in school and at home more comfortable is the main focal point.
